Rise of the boutique banks
Learn more at https://bigdeal.ft.com/
There was a time for bankers working in M&A where big was beautiful. But this all changed after the financial crisis, as the FT’s James Fontanella-Khan explains. Tougher regulations and more controls on pay packages prompted a wave of bankers to set up their own boutique firms, which today control over 30 per cent of M&A fees.

There are two main categories of investment banks elite boutiques and bulge brackets. Elite boutiques (like Evercore, Lazard, Centerview) are firms specifically focused on investment banking advisory. They don't have lending balance sheets and don't focus as much on other business units.
Elite boutiques tend to pay more and are more transparent with analysts recruiting to the buyside. Bulge bracket firms (like Goldman, Morgan Stanley) have much better brands outside of finance and are better for lateral opportunities into other divisions. In truth, it makes more...

2. Decide on size of market to cover (public co's, middle market, lower middle market)
3. Decide on industry coverage (AltQuest's coverage is broken down between Healthcare, Manufacturing, Software, and Business Services)
4. Break down industry into sub-verticals to cover into a reasoned taxonomy

How to Build a Boutique Investment Bank?
At Investment Banking University, we are often asked, "How to build a boutique investment bank?", so we created a methodology for doing so consistent with that which built AltQuest Group, the middle market boutique investment bank. This methodology is known as the Boutique Investment Bank Methodology which goes as follows:
1. Decide on the mix of investment banking product (M&A, capital-raising, growth advisory)
5. Build indices for industry and sub-verticals made up of public co's
6. Utilize Coverage & Origination Methodology to advise targets on strategic alternatives
7. Utilize Mandate/Target Matching Methodology to match strategic and financial buyers' mandates to targets
